Dom Pérignon – P2 Plénitude Brut Champagne 2000

Dom Perignon P2 2000

While flying First Class from Dubai with Emirates Airlines I was lucky enough to be offered a bottle of this wonderful Dom Pérignon P2 champagne 2000 while

The air hostess actually asked me if I’d like the “regular” Dom Pérignon or the special bottling of the P2 2000 Vintage (worth about $350 per bottle). Well, that was an easy choice to make!

What is P2?

In 2008 the P2 2000 vintage was released to the world, the P2 Champagnes are made in limited numbers. The disgorgement of the Dom Pérignon P2 Champagne 2000 took place after 12 – 15 years. In comparison, the the standard Dom Pérignon champagne is disgorged after 7 – 8 years. The ‘P’ prefix stands for Plénitude which roughly translated means ‘Fullness‘.

All Dom Pérignon Champagnes are vintage i.e the Champagne is not produced every year.

Dom Pérignon Champagne is made exclusively from 2 grape varieties, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes.

The summer of 2000 July was quite cool and rainy then August became progressively hotter and drier. This ripened the grapes when they had excellent moisture content.

The Taste

On the nose I found citrus notes especially lemon and also a hint of brioche. On the palate, the ‘opening’ was a complex explosion of taste. I tasted green apples with a slight mineral chalkiness from the Chardonnay. The Champagne had a beautiful structure emphasized by the Pinot Noir adding body and structure to the blend. I also detected just a hint of figs.

This is a complex and delightful champagne that will not fail to captivate anyone lucky enough to try it.
